PORTLAND, Maine (WGME) – Angus King III, the son of independent U.S. Senator and former Maine Governor Angus King, announced his campaign for governor of Maine on Tuesday. He plans to campaign as a Democrat.

King III says he has spent the last three decades working on innovative ways to solve problems and make people’s lives better.

“I’ve spent my life building and making things that really help people,” said Angus King III. “Now, I’m running for governor to build a better Maine – where it’s easier to start and grow a small business, where we can build our economy through innovation and hard work, and where it’s not so hard to afford the basic things you need to live and raise a family in the state we all love.”

He is the founder and former president of Peaks Renewables. King III says its project in Clinton is heating thousands of Maine homes and businesses, lowering emissions, and putting people to work every day without increasing costs for Mainers.

King III says he is running for governor to bring costs down, build more housing, help small businesses, and “build an economy that runs on hard work, innovation, and Maine common sense.”

He says he’ll “always fight for what’s right for Mainers, no matter who or what tries to stand in the way – in Maine, in Washington, or anywhere else.”

“Ever since the day we met in Skowhegan, I’ve known Angus has something special. He’s always been hard-working, smart, engaged, and caring, and I’m so proud of who he is today and the work he’s set out to do,” said Sen. King. “He’s a builder and an optimist who knows Maine and doesn’t quit until the job is done. He’s been building things to take care of people and make the world a better place throughout his life, and I think his combination of smarts, experience, and character will make him an excellent governor of Maine. In fact, I’m sure he’ll be in the top two governors named Angus ever.”

King III was born in Skowhegan and now lives in Portland with his wife, two children, and dog.

His father was Governor of Maine from 1995 to 2003.

Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows and Kenneth Pinet are also running on the Democratic side of the gubernatorial race.

Republicans running so far are Robert Wessels, Bobby Charles, and Steven Sheppard.

Alexander Murchison is also running for governor. He is not enrolled in a party.

Incumbent Janet Mills, also a Democrat, can’t run again due to term limits.
