Portland, Maine — Angus King III, candidate for Governor of Maine, criticized the Trump administration’s move to dismantle the federal climate “endangerment finding,” the scientific determination that greenhouse gas pollution endangers public health and safety.
“Donald Trump keeps coming up with ways to hurt both progress and people. He can pretend climate change isn’t real and costs don’t matter, but Maine people don’t have that luxury. We live with the consequences every day,” said King. “This policy will manage to increase energy costs, stop technological progress and put us behind the rest of the world, all at the same time. Meanwhile, states like Maine pay the price in higher energy costs, damaged fisheries, flooded roads, and rising insurance bills.”
King said the move would weaken long-standing protections that keep air clean and hold major polluters accountable — shifting costs onto working families instead.
King emphasized that Maine has always believed in facing hard facts head-on — not denying them.
“Maine people are practical. We fix problems instead of pretending they don’t exist. Just look at the lower costs that are going to come from the new energy storage project in Gorham – a great example of innovation and can-do. Trump’s approach is the opposite — deny the science, slow down progress, and just ignore the mess.”
As Governor, King said he would take a different approach — one rooted in independence, accountability, and Maine common sense.
“I’ll stand up to anyone — including Donald Trump — who tries to push new costs onto Maine people and hurt the environment we share. That means defending science and promoting clean energy that lowers costs and protects our environment at the same time. I know it can be done because I’ve done it.”
